Laptop Repairs

DIAGNOSTICS

Bring your laptop in and we will find the fault for you with no obligation or cost. We will then go ahead with the repair or discuss options according to your instructions.

If you want more detailed idea of potential repair costs before coming in, cases vary, but read on to get a general idea.

Black laptop screen but external monitor is working

If you can plug in an external monitor and see the image then you may have a problem with the graphics chip. These can be replaced on some models but it can take time for us to get the right part; so allow a week for this sort of repair.  Prices will start at £75.00 but specific parts and models can vary.

Broken Screen

Prices vary for screen size and age, but expect to pay around £75.00 for us to fix the most common 15 inch laptop screens. We sometimes have high quality second hand screens available which can reduce the cost slightly. Allow 48 hours for this sort of repair.

Touchscreen laptops are much more complicated. Please call to discuss your requirements before travelling.

Windows Not Loading

If your computer gets past the initial splash screen but locks up during booting then you have got a problem with your hard drive. This may be because the windows software has somehow been corrupted or it might be a hardware fault with the drive itself.

To fix a software fault that is stopping the computer starting will be £40.00. If you need a new drive then add on a new drive to the cost. Currently £30 will get a 320GB laptop drive drive – but consider upgrading to a solid state drive. SSD drives have no moving parts, use less power and are significantly faster. At the moment the cost per gigabyte is higher than the old style mechanical drive but have significant performance advantage. Prices are still falling but you could get a 240GB SSD installed for  £50.00. If you buy from us we will include the cost of recovering any data from the old drive.

No Splash Screen

The bios loading is the little screen of text before the Windows screen starts up. On some laptops this may have a logo from the manufacturer. If your computer screen shows no sign of life at all, (even if you can hear clicks and whirrs from the DVD or hard drive) and you cannot use an external monitor, it may be you have a motherboard issue.

If it is the Motherboard they are more expensive to repair. Some faults can be narrowed down to a specific replaceable component, but many are either untraceable or caused by components that have been welded to the board. That means you will need a new board to fix it.

If you are willing to spend £150 then we may be able to source a compatible board and replace it for you. Boards are available from the manufacturers but they are often more expensive than the laptop on all but the newest high end machines – so we would normally look for reconditioned options.

No Fix – No Fee

This is to give you an idea of the prices every case is different but this should give you an idea. But we do not charge for a diagnosis and if we cannot fix it you get the laptop back with no charge.
